A Change of Pace and a Detour

Greetings and happy summer to all of you! I hope each one of you is enjoying a slower– or at least, different– pace of life during these warm summer months.

I love the sun, blue skies, and longer days that summer brings. I am often able to appreciate the changing schedules and the new experiences I get to share with my children when they aren’t in school. New experiences mean plenty of chauffeuring, however, and it takes a lot of planning and organizing to make sure each child gets to where he or she needs to be and is picked up on time, etc. (Parents, you know the drill!). Still, each summer day brings something new and special, and I am grateful for the extra time with my son and daughter.

Last spring, I had a wonderful experience as a long-term substitute for a virtual school based in Minnesota. Though much of my teaching and tutoring experience is with upper elementary, middle and high school students, this position was for kindergarten and first graders! It was truly remarkable how quickly I felt connected to these sweet little students, who live all over Minnesota, as we connected virtually each day.

This very positive experience– on top of the success I have had with virtual tutoring– led me to peek into full-time employment options with virtual schools and online platforms…

It is with excitement that I share with all of my readers and clients that I recently accepted a position at the Minnesota Virtual Schools, part of the Minnesota Transitions Charter School District, as a special education teacher for grades 6-12.

I am excited about this change. Teaching during the school day enables me to reach many students when my own children are at school, while getting to do what I feel called to do. Being with my family in the evenings and weekends is a priority for me, and this position will enable me to do that.

It is sad for me to say goodbye to current clients as I settle into my new role; each student I work with has a special spot in my heart and I will always remember each and every one of you! I am hopeful that once I feel settled, I will be able to work with private tutoring clients again occasionally after school, or at the least, during school breaks and the summer months.

Thank you for all of your support with my tutoring company. I am not closing my doors for good by any means; I’m simply taking a detour and making the most of my gifts.

Romans 12:6-8:

In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well…If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

Last, dear tutoring students and families: Please drop me a line to say hello anytime! I love hearing updates and expect great things from each and every one of you!

  1. Congratulations, Julia- and what a nice note to your clients, who will miss you I know. That school is very fortunate to get your gifts, and I’m excited for your next adventure!
